Computer Science

Computing is an intellectually challenging yet very practical and rewarding discipline.  The course reflects this.  20% of the course, and the marks, involve creating programmed solutions to real world problems.  These may focus on creating applications, such as mobile and web apps as well as other software applications. The rest of the marks come from a range of theoretical topics which will help you understand how computers work and can be used to solve problems in the world you live in.
This Computer Science qualification will, above all else, be relevant to the modern and changing world of computer science. Computer Science is a practical subject where learners can apply the knowledge and skills learned in the classroom to real-world problems. It is an intensely creative subject that involves invention and excitement. The Computer Science qualification will value computational thinking, helping learners to develop the skills to solve problems and design systems that do so. These skills will be the best preparation for learners who want to go on to study Computer Science at AS and A Level and beyond. The qualification will also provide a good grounding for other subject areas that require computational thinking and analytical skills.

Key Stage 3

Computer Science at Key Stage 3 covers a broad range of topics, in year 7 pupils will learn about general information technology skills, basic programming using Scratch and components of a computer system. Year 8 follows on from this with units about advanced programming using Python, Computer Networks and e-safety. The aim of the Computer Science Key Stage 3 program is to develop students skills, knowledge and enthusiasm for Computer Science.

Year 7: (Unit 1) – Using Information Technology / (Unit 2) – Introduction to Programming / (Unit 3) – What is A Computer?

Year 8: (Unit 1) – Advanced Programming Techniques / (Unit 2) – Computer Networks / (Unit 3) – E-Safety

We encourage students to embrace the digital approach  to their work through the use of Cloud storage, online setting of homework and online marking.
