Enrichment and PSHCE

The academy recognises that Sixth Form life is not just about academic success, and we are dedicated to educating the whole student. We understand that intelligence and ability comes in multiple forms, and all students are actively encouraged to participate in a wide range of extra-curricular and enrichment activities: these are designed to develop personal interests, and to build confidence and self-esteem. 

Over recent years, our students have accessed some impressive sporting opportunities, organised charity events, and been involved in a diverse range of musical and creative arts’ programmes. Cultural and historic trips feature regularly, and all students actively take a leadership role within our House system, providing advice and pastoral support to our younger students.

On entry into Year 12, all students have an individual guidance meeting, where we look together at selecting a suitable enrichment option for them: a number chose to work alongside another student as a Peer Mentor, or train as one of our Reading Champions; others elect to take part in the Community Service Programme or run the Student Management Committee.

There is also an ambitious programme of PSHCE education, with opportunities to listen to external speakers talking about a diverse range of contemporary issues. The events planned for the academic year 2011-12 include, amongst others,  a focus on topics such as prison and the criminal justice system, sexual ethics and health, and the role of MI5 in the fight against terrorism.

A number of students who wish to be prepared for Oxbridge, or to apply for highly competitive courses such as Medicine, Veterinary Science, or Journalism, are also placed on an enhanced learning programme, and are able to receive detailed guidance from academic staff with a successful track record in this type of specialised preparation.
