- Body in Sport (Year 11)
Further information about the course can be found at www.edexcel.org

Edexcel BTEC National Award in Sport
The BTEC National Award is the equivalent to an A Level, it offers students the opportunity to gain the same UCAS points as an A Level course, but is assessed through coursework throughout the two years rather than through examinations at the end of each year. The course runs over a two year period and consists of students studying a total of six units. They must study three compulsory units:
- Unit 1 – The Body in Action
- Unit 2 – Health and Safety in Sport
- Unit 3 – Training and Fitness for Sport
Students will also study three specialist units titled:
- Unit 4 - Sports Coaching
- Unit 6 - Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise
- Unit 8 - Practical Individual Sports
A three point grading scale of pass, merit and distinction is applied to all units. Points are then awarded to each grade. Pass = 2 points, merit = 4 points and distinction = 6 points. Students must gain at least a pass in every unit in order to pass the overall course. The total amount of points needed to achieve a pass, merit or distinction overall is set by the exam board at the start of the course.
Throughout the course students are assessed internally, in other words there is no final examination! Students are continually assessed by Unit tutors using a wide variety of different methods, which include essays, PowerPoint presentations, interviews, practical assessments, leaflet designs, role plays and writing case studies.
This course could lead to a degree in the sport or leisure industry, employment in the leisure industry or similar establishments and teaching physical education.
In order to be successful at this course students should have 5 GCSE’s at grade A*-C. They will also need to be interested in a variety of different sports, committed, hardworking and prepared to work outside of classroom hours.
In order to find out more about the course students and parents should access the Edexcel website: www.edexcel.org or speak to a member of the Physical Education Department.
