Health and Social Care GCSE is a double award course which covers four units: Health, Social Care and Early Years provision, Promoting Health and Well-being, Understanding personal

development and relationships and safeguarding and protecting individuals. The assessment of this course requires pupils to produce two portfolios and complete two written examinations.

Health, Social Care and Early Years Provision

This is a portfolio assessed unit which is completed in Year 11. Students will use information gathered from their work experience placement to complete this. The unit focuses on services within Health, Social Care and Early Years. Students will be required to understand the main needs of client groups and how these are met by different services. They will know how to access different services and the barriers to these services.

They will need to know how the services are organised and how these services work together to meet the needs of the clients and finally how the values of care are maintained by the care workers.

Promoting Health and Well-being

This is a portfolio assessed unit which is completed in Year 10. Students will gain an understanding of what health and well-being is, the factors that promote good health and those that are at risk to health. They will be able to measure the health of an individual and discuss the results of this and then produce a health plan to improve the health of an individual.

Understanding personal development and relationships

This is an examination based unit. Studentss will learn about how we grow and develop from birth to death. They will study the factors that can support and inhibit growth and development. They will gain an understanding of the factors that influence the development of a person’s self-concept and the effects that relationships have on personal development. They will also learn about life events and how these can affect personal development and what support is available to people at this time.

Safeguarding and protecting individuals

This is an examination based unit and will be covered in Year 11. Students will be able to identify those people who are classed as vulnerable and situations where these people may need to be safeguarded. They will learn about the effects of a lack of safeguarding can have on individuals.

They will also gain a basic understanding of the different Acts and legislation that is in place to protect individuals within Health, Social Care and Early Years Services. Students will learn the measures that are in place to prevent the spread of infection and the procedures that need to be followed. They will gain a basic understanding of first aid and how to recognise potential risks to health and safety.
