'A picture is a poem without words'

The Art department at The Bushey Academy prides itself on making art meaningful, enjoyable and accessible to all students. We provide a unique means of self-expression whilst promoting the confidence and desire in the students to produce work of
quality.
Mrs C Tomlin - Head of Art Mr P Fuller
In order to achieve these objectives an understanding of the formal elements of art and design is essential together with technical competence in a wide range of media. Practical demonstrations are central to the teaching ethos of the department providing an effective means of introducing new skills and techniques whilst generating confidence in the students. During key stage 3 the schemes of work ensure that every student has multiple opportunities to demonstrate and enhance their skills, knowledge and understanding enabling progression through the level descriptions for art and design. The 'Fine Art' GCSE course is a popular option choice and the department is justifiably proud of the results achieved by the students. The course builds on the prior learning of skills from Key Stage 3 and encourages independent learning and creative thought. The demanding A Level course requires pupils to take a 'voyage of discovery' throughout their practical projects. In the second year, students complete a written project detailing their research into art history.
